Listed below are the types of documents you will generally need when applying for your loan.

This list will enable you to gather what you need for the mortgage application process ahead of time, so things can move along smoothly when you are ready to move forward with pursuing a home loan.
Commonly Required Documents
Personal & Identification
- Social Security numbers
- Home addresses for the past two years
- Proof of identification (Driver’s license, passport, etc.)
- Copies of Social Security cards (if requested)
Income Documentation
- Most recent pay stubs covering at least 30 days
- W-2 forms for the past two years
- If self-employed: Federal tax returns for the past two years (all pages and schedules)
Note: Self-employed borrowers will need to provide both personal and business returns. - Social Security or pension award letters (if applicable)
- Documentation for child support or alimony only if you choose to use it as qualifying income
Assets & Accounts
- Two months of statements for checking, savings, IRA, 401(k), and investment accounts
- Gift letter if funds from family or friends will be used for down payment or closing costs
Additional Documents That May Be Needed
Depending on the type of loan and your individual situation, you may also be asked for:
- Letters of explanation for items on your credit report (late payments, collections, recent credit inquiries, etc.)
- Landlords name, address & phone number, if you rent
